Custom Steel Tank Fabrication: From Engineering Through Field Installation
When a plant manager needs a tank, the real request is rarely just a tank. It is a tank or vessel that fits the process, meets the code, arrives on schedule, and runs for decades without issue.
After decades in this business, we can tell you the best custom tank projects start with a simple conversation: tell us what you need, tell us which codes or regulations apply, and let us handle the rest.
We Can Start With Requirements or Drawings
Most customers come to us with a process need. It might be a fermentation tank, a flammable liquid storage vessel, a pressure vessel, or a large atmospheric tank for bulk product.
You don’t need a finished design package when you contract WINBCO. You can simply share the basics: contents, volume, operating temperature and pressure, site conditions, and the codes that govern the work. Backed by 85 years of industry knowledge, our experts will handle the rest of the details.
Meeting Your Code Requirements
API 650 covers welded above-ground storage tanks for oil, fuels and other chemicals in low pressure service. UL 142 governs shop-built tanks for flammable and combustible liquids. ASME rules apply when a vessel must contain pressure.
At WINBCO, we’ve literally built thousands of tanks to these standards, so we know where the code is fixed and where there is room to tailor the design to your operation.
Engineering and Planning to Prevent Problems Later
Good fabrication begins long before the first plate is cut. That’s especially true when it comes to custom tank work, which typically comes with a long list of complex requirements and potential engineering challenges.
Our engineers review your requirements and look for savings in cost and schedule while the project is still on paper. A small decision early, such as roof pitch, nozzle placement, or floor style, can prevent a major headache during installation or years down the road.
Material choice deserves particular attention. We work in carbon steel, stainless, duplex and super duplex stainless, and nickel alloys, including Hastelloy. For corrosive chemicals or product purity concerns, stainless often delivers a longer service life and lower maintenance cost than coated or lined carbon steel. For other services, carbon steel may be the best and most economical answer.
Shop, Site, or Field: One Builder
Where a tank gets built depends on size, logistics and your schedule. We handle all three paths under one roof, with one point of contact.
Shop fabrication suits small to mid-size tanks, highly configured vessels and anything requiring polished finishes or tight tolerances. Working indoors lets us control welding conditions, inspection and quality before the vessel ships. Our facilities offer over 100,000 square feet of under-roof floor space across multiple locations.
On-site fabrication and field erection are necessary when a tank is too large to ship. Our capabilities include diameters surpassing 200 feet and volumes exceeding millions of gallons. On site we are fully independent. We source our own contractors, materials and equipment, so your operations keep running while we build.
Many projects combine approaches. Components may be prefabricated in the shop for quality and speed, then assembled and welded in the field. Because one team owns both sides, the handoff between shop and site does not become a gap in accountability.

Weld Quality You Can Verify
Welding integrity is the heart of tank performance. We use advanced welding and construction processes, including 100% penetration welding to X-ray standards where required. Inspection and testing continue until the finished tank is proven ready for service, not just built.
Cost and schedule certainty matter just as much. We work under fixed-rate contracts, so there are no surprise fees. Our record backs it up: 98% of projects completed on time across roughly 3,000 jobs in the past ten years. As an employee-owned company, the people building your tank have a personal stake in getting it right.
American Manufacturers Have Trusted WINBCO Tanks Since 1939
We built the first anhydrous ethanol plant in the country in 1978, and today 80% of ethanol producers have called on us. Our work also serves chemical processing, food and beverage, oil storage, sustainable biofuels and sustainable aviation fuels. Each industry has its own demands, but the approach stays the same: engineer it right, build it right, and deliver on time.
When American manufacturers and industrial operations need a custom tank fabricator they can trust to get the job done, they turn to WINBCO. Our promise since 1939 has been simple: on line, on time. Send us your requirements, including any regulatory specifications, and we will take the project from engineering through field installation.
